The Thorsborne Trail – Hinchinbrook Island

The Thorsborne Trail is one of Australia’s most breath-taking multi-day hikes, stretching 32 kilometres along the eastern coast of Hinchinbrook Island, Queensland. This rugged and remote trek offers untouched wilderness, towering mountains, pristine beaches, and crystal-clear waterfalls, making it a bucket-list adventure for serious hikers.

What to Expect

The Thorsborne Trail is a challenging yet rewarding hike, typically completed in 3 to 5 days. Hikers traverse diverse terrain, including rainforest, coastal mangroves, rocky headlands, and secluded beaches. The trail provides incredible views of Mt. Bowen (1,121m), the highest peak on the island, as well as encounters with local wildlife such as cassowaries, dugongs, and crocodiles.

Highlights of the Thorsborne Trail:

  • Zoe Falls – A stunning freshwater waterfall with a natural infinity pool overlooking the coast.
  • Mulligan Falls – A refreshing swimming spot surrounded by lush rainforest.
  • Ramsay Bay – The starting point of the trail, offering stunning views of the Coral Sea.
  • Nina Bay & Little Ramsay Bay – Perfect locations for camping and enjoying the tranquility of the island.
  • Sunset Views & Remote Beaches – Unparalleled coastal scenery with golden-hour magic.

Permits & Camping

Due to its ecological significance, only 40 hikers are allowed on the trail at any given time. A permit is required from Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS), and camping is strictly limited to designated sites. Hikers must be self-sufficient, carrying their own food, water purification systems, and camping equipment.

Important Information – No Transfers Provided

EPIC North does not provide transfers to Hinchinbrook Island for hikers. Visitors must arrange their own boat or charter transport to the trailhead at Ramsay Bay (north) and their return pickup from George Point (south). Commercial ferry and charter operators from Cardwell and Lucinda offer these services.

Safety & Considerations

  • Experience Required – The Thorsborne Trail is recommended for experienced hikers due to its remote and rugged nature.
  • Weather Conditions – The best time to hike is during the dry season (May–September). Wet season conditions (November–April) can bring extreme heat, heavy rain, and dangerous river crossings.
  • Wildlife Awareness – Crocodiles inhabit the island’s estuaries, and precautions should be taken near waterways.
  • Leave No Trace – Hikers must follow strict eco-friendly practices to preserve Hinchinbrook’s fragile environment.
